Do you know how excessive screen time may harm your child’s brain?

Earlier, our education system involved fewer equipment and used to be more textbooks based. Everything used to happen offline. From learning to playing to guidance sessions, everything used to happen face to face and offline. The kids would travel to nurseries in buses, cars, on foot and come back home the same way. All these little things helped the kids create memories and learn about the basics of inclusion by means of interaction and observation of the surrounding environment.

Excessive screen time has never proved to be healthy

Nowadays, children get early exposure to a computer, tablet and mobile phones. Ideally this exposure should have come in the later stages of their educational life. In the early stages of their childhood, they should be taught live and face-to-face as human interaction is essential for their wholesome development.

Why is that?

  1. Violence: Exposure to violent Tv shows, video games, and movies, can cause children to adapt it. Overtime, they may use violence to solve problems and may also imitate what they watch.
  2. Sleep Problems: It has been observed that parents use mobile phones or tabloids to lure children to sleep before bed time. However, the light emitted from the screen can disturb the sleep cycle and eventually lead to insomnia.
  3. Lower thinking and reasoning power: Studies have shown that excessive screen time can impact the Cerebral Cortex (brain area) of the child by making it thin and hence affects the reasoning and logical abilities.
  4. Affects overall development: Since children tend to imitate their parents, spending more time with a virtual world can certainly affect physical, behavioural, emotional, and cognitive development.
  5. Impact on speech: Since spending time with screen is a one-way involvement, there is no reciprocal conversation, no involvement of facial expressions, no emotional input. All this affect the speech and communication skills.
